Traditions, Celebrations, and Your Wellbeing
Hi there, and welcome to June!
This is a very special month as I’m sure you know, the month when we celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This wonderful woman has given us 70 years of tireless dedication, longer than any British monarch. In this post I’d like to share with you some of the reasons why traditions and regular celebrations are so important for our wellbeing. I hope the knowledge will make you even more enthusiastic about celebrating the Queen’s amazing achievement.
As far back as we can delve into our history, humans have come together to celebrate certain occasions and times of year—Christmas and before that Midwinter’s Day and the Summer Solstice are great examples. How can participating in such events help you?
First, traditions will reinforce your sense of identity. They remind you of who you are, who you belong with, where you came from, and what your place is in your communities.
These occasions also remind your of your values, in particular your duties and obligations to others.
Traditional celebrations afford an excuse to meet up with those people you love. You’ll feel more comfortable because you know the agenda, and you’ll have the opportunity to compare your experiences on any particular meeting-up with all those that have gone before. This confers a sense of continuity, solidarity and safety.
Finally, and perhaps most important, these traditional celebrations offer a time away from our busy lives, a time to reflect. You have the chance to ask yourself if you’re honouring your own and your communities’ values, and whether you’re living your life in the best way you know how. This ‘time out’ also allows you to stand back from your day-to-day life, consider whether you’d like to make any adjustments to the way you’re living, and if so how to go about doing so.
This month, make the most of a truly unique occasion.
With warmest celebration wishes,
Linda
