Hello, welcome - it’s our June focus on balance and light!
As pet parents, we will focus on providing the best nutrition, exercise, and comfort for our dogs, but one crucial element that may get overlooked is the importance of exposure to natural daylight. Just like humans, dogs benefit significantly from the natural cycles of daylight, which play a vital role in their overall health and wellbeing.
As we’re striding towards the longest day, you might be celebrating the fact that you can take longer, sunnier walks after-work or later in the evening. But don’t forget the other parts of the day!
Daylight exposure throughout a 24-hour period helps regulate your dog's circadian rhythm - the internal body clock that dictates sleep/wake cycles, feeding patterns, and can even impact your dog’s behaviour. Two key hormones, serotonin and melatonin, are influenced by exposure to different types of light, particularly during the summer months when daylight hours are longer.
Serotonin, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormone, is crucial for mood regulation and overall mental health of both us and our dogs. Morning sunlight, which is rich in blue light, triggers the production of Serotonin - helping your dog to feel alert, energetic, and happy.
As the day progresses, light shifts towards the red spectrum which increases production of Melatonin, the "sleep hormone". If you want your dog to get the best night’s rest - evening walks during twilight can be particularly beneficial.
Whether it's a morning walk, afternoon chew in the garden, or an evening stroll, ensuring your dog experiences the natural progression of daylight can significantly improve their emotional and physical wellbeing.
Until next time, embrace the light!
