Autumnal Walks with Your Dog
Hi there and welcome to our “cosy” month.
The autumn provides a wonderful sense of anticipation for the end of the year. Whether that’s for festive celebrations, special time with loved ones, or just the hope a fresh new year provides. I always find there’s something rather special about this time of year.
However, we don’t want to wish this time away too quickly. There are some incredible sights to behold outside your front door today, which can disappear all too soon. The enjoyment of feeling “cosy” doesn’t have to only be inside - the warmth of colours outdoors at the moment can bring the “cosy” outside.
The combination of rain, falling leaves, and all the incredible colours creates a unique experience on each autumnal walk.
Did you know that some plants secrete oils during dry periods, which then get carried in the air when it rains? Plus bacteria in the soil is also released as rain falls. Both of these create what's known as "petrichor" scent - which is the lovely fresh smell us humans enjoy, especially during the autumnal months.
Smells also get amplified when it's been raining. The water droplets allow more scent to settle - giving our dogs an extra special sniffing experience on walks. Again, these are perfect at the moment - as those autumn leaves provide a hotbed for the smells to fall on!
So, while we’re planning and prepping for the weeks to come - don’t forget to live for today’s sights and smells. They won’t be here tomorrow.
Until next time, enjoy those autumnal strolls!
