Taking Advantage of the Light
Hi and welcome back,
In my first post to you this month, I challenged you (gently!) to look for ways to pamper yourself and your dog during the dark November evenings, while learning more at the same time.
This post is about the reverse: the light days.
We need natural light in the winter more than ever—and especially this year because our immune systems is unusually challenged. We need it because daylight, whether or not the sun is shining when you’re out, will help in four ways in particular:
First, sunlight is thought to increase our serotonin levels. This neurotransmitter is believed to boost mood and help you stay calm and focused.
Daylight also increases your level of Vitamin D, the vitamin that helps to reduce inflammation, boost immunity and build strong bones. If you’re walking your dog while you’re out, you’ll increase bone density further.
Another advantage of getting out and moving in natural light is that you’ll release endorphins, our ‘feel good’ chemicals. This means you’ll return from your walk feeling more positive than when you set out.
Fourth, getting out every day in natural light helps maintain our circadian rhythm—our internal body clock—which in turn allows you to fall asleep more easily and sleep more restfully through the night.
November. Snuggle up in the evenings and take advantage of the daylight. Enjoy!
Until next time,
Linda
